Today, there are four main types of grill and smokers. Most backyard cooks believe in good ol’ charcoal! However, there are other options that give you plenty of smoke and depends on how much time you want to spend checking your fire / temp. The four main types of grills are Charcoal, Pellet, Gas or Electric. All four of these can do the exact same thing, just in different ways (and providing different levels of smoke).
Below, I will state the key differences of having each of these type of smokers / grills!
Charcoal Grills
Charcoal grills can provide high heat, typically less expensive, more flavor and provides you a feeling of pride when you master it’s skill.
These grills are more messy, smokey and take a significant more amount of time tending to the fire.

Pellet Grills
Pellet grills provide a consistent heat, less maintenance/cleaning and less time checking your fire or temperature.
Although Pellet grills are becoming more and more popular, the big draw back is that it does not provide as much smoke than a typical charcoal grill. You also need an electric outlet to operate the auger.
